- Uncover individual values and preferences
How can OTs find out more about skills, abilities and interests of a person with an intellectual disability?
- Avoid making assumptions
- Use observation and discussion to gather information
- Use and support their communication system
- Ensure that they are aware of sensory or motor challenges that may impact how they interact with their environment
- Understand their context
What is dual disadvantage?
A person with a disability is also from a culturally linguistically diverse background or is living in a remote area
What is the developmental approach?
- Learning doesn’t stop - people can learn and develop
What are complex communication needs?
- People with disabilities who have severe speech and language impairments

- the right to acces information that affects their lives and allows particiaption in decision making
- the same rights to privacy
