W30-L9: Exercise and Drug Interactions Flashcards
How does plasma GTN increase with exercise?
Increased skin temp increases skin blood flow
What are the implications of increased absorption of GTN?
- may provide benefit for exercise-induced angina
- may cause hypotension and divert coronary blood flow
How does plasma salbutamol increase with exercise?
- increased resp rate
- increased pulmonary blood flow
- increased epithelial permeability
What are the implications of increased absorption of salbutamol?
- -may provide benefit for exercise-induced asthma
- bronchodilator effects are less prolonged (need more frequent dosing)
How does exercise effect warfarin and INR?
Decreases INR which causes shorter clotting time and risk of thrombosis
How does exercise effect digoxin plasma levels?
moves to active muscle so is decreased in the plasma during exercise
How does exercise effect digoxin muscle levels?
Increases as digoxin moves to active muscle
How does exercise effect ß blocker plasma levels?
Reduced hepatic (propranolol) or renal (atenolol) clearance as blood flow is decreased
What are the implications of increased ß blocker plasma levels?
Increased risk of bronchoconstriction, fatigue
Why are diuretics used in sport doping?
- Loss of weight
- Dilution of urine will decrease concentration of other banned drugs
Why are ß1 antagonists used in sport doping?
- Reduce HR and stress
- Stops hands and body shaking
Why are ß2 agonists used in sport doping?
- Increases skeletal muscle blood flow
- Anabolic to muscle mass
- Catabolic to body fat
Are ß2 agonists allowed in sport?
Only via inhalation (i.e not systemic)
Why are glucocorticosteroids used in sport doping?
- Anti-inflammatory can mask pain
- Can compete with injury
Are glucocorticosteroids allowed in sport?
Topical yes, intra-articular requires approval and systemic no
Why are androgens used in sport doping?
Increases muscle strength and allows harder training
