W30-L5: Exercise muscle and fuels Flashcards
What is functional capacity dependent on?
dependent on muscle mass
What is good about a large muscle mass?
they are a big user of glucose and fat so protective against diabetes and obesity
What are the types of fibres and what are there characteristics?
Type I= Slow twitch
Type IIa= fast twitch
Type IIx= fastest twitch
How are muscle fibre type recruited?
as you increase exercise intensity you recruit more type II fibres (2a then 2x)
What are the early causes of increased strength?
Neuromuscular adaptions
What does training cause?
- Increased mitochondrial density and oxidative enzymes
- Reduced CHO use and lactate production
- Increased fat oxidation
What happens when you run out of carbohydrates and move onto fat as an energy source?
rate at which you generate ATP decreases (as you can’t maintain the same output on fat as carbs)
How is power related to capacity?
Inversely proportional
What is the major fuel for endurance exercise?
Glycogen
What is the definition of fatigue?
reversible reduction in force and power generating capacity induced by exercise and reduced by rest
What is the definition of weakness?
reduced muscle power at rest
What is the feedback between the muscle and brain and how does exercise effect it?
balancing act between central motor drive and muscle, exercise and fatigue affects
all these processes
What does increasing glycogen availability result in?
Increased performance
