W3: Spinal cord, PNS, brainstem Lab 3 Flashcards
What are the rules for numbering spinal nerves?
C1-C7: exit above vertebrae
C8 and below: exit blow vertebrae
What are the 4 sections of spinal nerves?
Cervical
Thoracic
Lumbar
Sacral
Where do nerves from the cervical cord innervate?
structures of the arm (skin, muscle)
Where do nerves from the thoracic cord innervate?
structures of the trunk (intercostal)
Where do nerves from the lumbar cord innervate?
structures of the leg (sciatic and tibial nerves)
Cutaneous nerves
some peripheral nerces that innervate only on cutaneous receptors (tactile sensations)
Mixed nerves
contain both motor and sensory axons.
Plexuses
Network of nerves that travel together and innervate the same area (grouping of axons from two or more spinal nerves.
1) brachial plexus C5-T1
2) lumbar plexus L1-L4
3) secral plexus L4-S4
* lumbosacral plexus
What nerve branches into the tibial nerve entering the lower leg muscle?
Sciatic nerve
What types of axons are contained in a mixed nerves such as the sciatic nerve?
sensory and motor nerves.
What are the 12 cranial nerves?
I - Olifactory II - Optic III - Oculomotor IV - Trochlear V - Trigeminal VI - Abducens VII - Facial VIII - Vestibulocochlear IX - Glossopharyngeal X - Vagus XI - Spinal Accessory XII - Hypohglossal
