What are the two legal requirements that govern patient confidentiality?
A
- Data protection act= protects the patients personal information being misused
- Caldicott Principles= 8 principles that ensure that patient information remains confidential and is used appropriately

What are the caldicott principles about? (info)
A
Confidentiality
- Justify the purpose(s) for using confidential information
- Use confidential information only when it is necessary.
- Use the minimum necessary confidential information
- Access to confidential information should be on a strict need-to-know
- Everyone with access to confidential information should be aware of their
responsibilities - Comply with the law
- The duty to share information for individual care is as important as the duty to protect
patient confidentiality - Inform patients and service users about how their confidential information is used

What is the Duty of candour?
A
- Speaking up and being honest when things go wrong
- Being honest with the patient - apologising
- Reflecting upon WHY things have gone wrong, HOW we can prevent them happening in the future

A
- Discuss with your placement supervisor
- Discuss with a member of the University
