Why have Quality Improvement in Healthcare?
- Healthcare is not always safe and can lead to poor patient experiences and outcomes
- Financial pressures are challenging healthcare services
- Options?
- Indiscriminate cuts; or
- Design services to improve efficiency & reduce levels of harm
- The people best placed to make those improvements are those who work in those areas day in day out, and know what needs to change.
This is why Improving Quality Together is for everyone.
What is Quality in Healthcare?
“Quality is meeting and exceeding the customer’s needs and expectations and then continuing to improve”.
What are the 6 domains of Quality in healthcare? (STEEEP)
Safety
Timely
Effective
Equitable
Person centred
What is meant by Safety?
Avoiding harm to staff and patients from the care that is intended to help them
e.g. keeping a record of near misses
What is meant by Timely?
Care reducing waits and harmful delays for both those who receive and those who give care.
E.g. Can you access the care you need when you need it?
What is meant by Effective?
Care based on scientific knowledge to all
who could benefit and refraining from actions to those not likely to benefit
What is meant by Efficiency?
- Avoids waste, of equipment, supplies, ideas, and energy
- Best treatment in the quickest way possible
What is meant by Equitable?
-Care that does not vary in quality because of personal characteristic such as gender, ethnicity, geographic location, and socio-economic status
- Ensure that all people have equal access to the NHS service
What is meant by Person-centred?
Care that is respectful of and responsive to
individual patient preferences, needs and values, and ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions
- Shared decision making
What is Improvement Science?
“Improvement science is about finding out how to improve and make changes in the most effective way. It is about systematically examining the methods and factors that best work to facilitate quality improvement.”
