How is the strength of an attitude identified?
The strength of an attitude is identified by how quickly it is expressed (come to mind easily)
What does effective persuasion involve?
Appearing unbiased: both sides are brought up.
Credibility: Speaking fast and in a straightforward manner
Fear arousal: Moderate fear including ways to reduce the danger.
What are the ways in which information is processed?
Central processing: Examining the message and finds the argument compelling.
Peripheral processing: Not examining the message but is persuaded by the speaker’s attractiveness and emotional response.
How is the route of a message determined in the elaboration likelihood model?
Motivation (relevance of the message)
Ability (use cognition to see beyond emotions)
Opportunity (access to all info and time to process)
What is sociometer theory?
Suggests that our self-esteem measures our acceptance or inclusion in a group.
How to prevent persuasion?
We create strong attitudes- forewarning and inoculation can increase this.
What is social facilitation?
Individuals’ performance is improved by the presence of a group.
What is social loafing?
Individuals tend to give less than their expected effort because they believe others will pick up the slack.
What is group polarization?
Ocurs when the presence of a group leads to people developing more extreme opinions than when they first started.
What is groupthink?
When a group tends towards the same opinions in order to preserve harmony and unity.
Common knowledge effect
Group discusses things everyone knows and not evaluating on new ideas.
What is Implicit Association Test (IAT)?
People react quickly when they believe that two words are associated.
What is social identity theory?
Tendency to favor in groups over out groups.
What is social dominance orientation?
A belief that group hierarchies are natural and inevitable and help society maintain stability.
