Good semantic and good phonological skills

- Impaired semantics and phonological skills
- Lots of reasons for clients to fall into this group - e.g. a language impairment such as DLD

What is dyslexia?
- Good semantic skills
- Impaired phonological skills
What are the causes of dyslexia?
Genetic - children are more likely to have dyslexia if their parents do
Neurobiological - brain differences are evident in people with dyslexia
Psychosocial Influence - lower SES = lower reading ability. Generally, larger families more likely to have children who are poor readers.
Beyond literacy, what potential impacts do people with dyslexia face?
- Learning new subject specific vocabulary
- Meeting deadlines
- Managing/Organising their Time
- Forgetting appointments
- Many poor readers disengage with literacy and education
At preschool age, what are the symptoms of dyslexia?
- Delayed speech
- Poor expressive language
- Poor rhyming skills
- Little interest in/difficulty learning letters
