W11 Flashcards
What is a Type 1 error?
It occurs when the null hypothesis is true, but we incorrectly reject it.
What is a Type 2 error?
It occurs when the null hypothesis is false, but we incorrectly accept it.
What are random errors?
Random errors occur due to chance or when researchers are just unlucky sometimes.
What are systematic errors?
Systematic errors result in consistent errors in published results due to factors like publication bias or questionable research practices (QRPs).
What is meta-science?
Meta-science involves using scientific methodology to study the scientific process itself, aiming to identify its strengths and weaknesses and explore potential solutions.
What does reproducible mean?
A result is reproducible when the same analysis steps produce the same result on the same dataset.
What does robust mean?
Results are robust when different analyses on the same dataset yield the same results.
What does replicable mean?
Replicable means that the same analysis performed on different datasets produces the same result.
What does generalizable mean?
A result is generalizable when applying new analysis choices to new datasets yields the same general result.
How can research be improved?
By adopting practices such as open science, replications, paying attention to effect sizes, conducting studies across multiple labs, and preregistering research protocols.
