W 8-15 Vocab Flashcards
Attenuation
The gradual loss of intensity of a wave as it travels.
Sampling Rate
The number of measurements taken per second.
Transverse
A wave that consists of vibrations that are perpendicular to the direction that the energy travels.
Wavelength
The length of one wave cycle.
Reflect/Reflection
A property of waves wherein the wave bounces off an object.
Angle of Incidence
The angle between the incoming light ray and the normal line when light hits the surface of a different medium.
Angle of Reflection
The angle between the incoming light ray and the normal line when light is reflected off a surface.
Angle of Refraction
The angle between the normal line and the path the light travels in the new medium when light is transmitted from one medium to another.
Critical Angle
The angle of incidence in a more dense medium that produces a 90-degree angle of refraction in a less dense medium.
Refraction
The redirection of a wave at the boundary between two transparent materials.
Total Internal Reflection
The reflection of light that occurs when the angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle for a pair of media.
Transmit/Transmission
The act of energy passing through a medium or vacuum.
Visible Light Spectrum
The part of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye and is perceived as light; the colored light of a rainbow.
Absorb/Absorption
The process of energy entering a material but not exiting the material.
Electromagnetic Spectrum
The continuous range of all possible electromagnetic waves.
