IAPS Chemical Reactions Key Science Vocabulary Flashcards
A thin plate that electrically connects computer chips and other electronic components. The connecting pathways are etched in copper and laminated onto a nonconductive material.
Circuit Board
A chemical process that cuts into a solid surface.
Etch
A process during which a substance or substances change into one or more new substances as a result of a change in the arrangements of atoms in molecules.
Chemical Change
A process during which a substance or substances change into one or more new substances as a result of a change in the arrangements of atoms in molecules.
Chemical Reaction
To mix into another substance at the scale of individual particles (atoms or molecules).
Dissolve
A change that occurs when the spacing or interactions between particles in a substance change or the particles mix with other particles. The particles themselves do not change because there are no changes in the arrangement of atoms in the molecules of the substances.
Physical Change
An insoluble solid formed when two liquid solutions are mixed, or to form an insoluble solid when two liquid solutions are mixed.
Precipitate
The physical form of matter—solid, liquid, or gas.
State
A symbolic representation of the reactants and products in a chemical reaction.
Chemical Equation
Saved; neither gained nor lost.
Conserved
A chemical substance that is by the reactants; that is, the final substances present at the end of the reaction.
Products
A chemical substance that enters into a reaction; the original substances present before a reaction takes place.
Reactants
The principle (or scientific law) that mass is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical reaction.
Conservation of Mass
The scientific principle that mass is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical reaction.
Law of Conservation of Mass
The amount of matter in an object.
Mass
A system that does not allow matter or energy to enter or escape.
Closed System
A system that allows matter or energy to enter or escape.
Open System
In engineering design, something that limits the solution to a problem.
Constraint
In engineering design, the goals and the desired features of the solution.
Criterion/Criteria
An early sample of a product that provides information about how the device or system works.
Prototype
A process that absorbs energy.
Endothermic
A process that releases energy.
Exothermic
The energy of an object due to the motion of the particles (atoms or molecules) within the object.
Thermal Energy
Someone who uses science and tools to build a product that solves a practical problem.
Engineer
A series of steps that engineers follow to come up with a solution to a problem.
Engineering Design Process
The process of reclaiming waste material for reuse.
