IAPS Fields and Interactions Key Science Vocabulary Flashcards
Energy stored due to an object’s mass and height.
Gravitational Potential Energy
A natural phenomenon that causes objects to be pulled toward each other.
Gravity
The amount of matter in an object.
Mass
A push or a pull.
Force
A force that affects objects that are not touching.
Force at a Distance
The amount of gravitational pull between two objects.
Gravitational Force
An area that surrounds an object and extends through space, which may exert a force on another object.
Field
A line that indicates the direction of the field at all locations along the line.
Field Lines
A field that affects all objects with mass.
Gravitational Field
A field that affects objects with magnetic properties.
Magnetic Field
A force between objects due to the magnetic properties of each object.
Magnetic Force
A very small region in an object where the entire region has the same magnetic alignment.
Domain
A magnet in which the domains are well aligned in the material and are not easily changed.
Permanent Magnet
An object that is unmagnetized in its natural state but can become magnetized when placed in a magnetic field.
Temporary Magnet
A quick flow of electricity from one object with static electricity to another.
Discharge
A tiny particle that inter- acts with other charges.
Electric Charge
The force exerted between charged objects.
Electrostatic Force
A field that exerts a force on a charge or a charged object.
Electric Field
A device that stores electric charge.
Capacitor
The rate that electric charge moves through a wire.
Electric Current
The phenomenon of generating an electric field from a magnetic field. Likewise, a magnetic field can be generated by an electric field.
Electromagnetic Induction
A field made up of both electric and magnetic fields.
Electromagnetic Field
A type of train propelled by magnetic forces between the train and a guideway.
