Vygotsky Flashcards
What theory does Vygotsky preach about and what does it mean?
He believes the sociocultural theory emphasizes the importance of culture and interaction in the development of cognitive abilities.
What are the 3 focuses of his theory?
Play, language, and socio-cultural aspects.
What is play?
Vygotsky argued that in play, children perform at a higher level than in other real-life contexts. Play gives children an opportunity to solve problems and develop an understanding of rules.
How were language and communication an important factor for these children?
Vygotsky emphasized language plays a development of abstract thought. Language helped the interaction between these children.
What is zone proximal development?
What they can do with help.
What is the zone of actual development?
What I can do with no help.
What is scaffolding?
The role of teachers and others support the child and provide support structures to help them get to the next stage or level.
What is sustained shared thinking?
when two or more individuals work together to achieve something or work out. Both parties must contribute to the thinking and develop the understanding.
What is apprenticeship learning?
The metaphor that best describes it is ‘ little apprentices’ who receive the help and support that they need from teachers in learning situations. Therefore, the development comes from outside of the individual rather than the inside.
What does it mean by the more knowledgeable other?
Someone who has a higher level of knowledge than the learner can provide them instructions to complete the task or understand better.
What does it mean by inner speech?
The gradual evolution of ‘inner speech’ as they acquire mental concepts and cognitive awareness.
