Bowlby Flashcards
What theory did Bowlby develop?
He believed that mental health and behavioral problems could be attributed to early childhood.
What did he believe children had the innate need to do?
He believed that children had the innate need to build a relationship with the main figure, usually the mother. When this isn’t successful then it has negative consequences on development, such as depression, aggression, and delinquency.
What are the stages of forming attachments?
Pre - attachment
Indiscriminate attachment
Specific attachment
Multiple attachments
What is pre-attachment?
Birth to 6 months; baby shows no specific attachment to caregiver.
What is indiscriminate attachment?
6 weeks to 7 months; The Infant begins to show preference for primary and secondary caregivers.
What is discriminated attachment?
7 plus months; the Baby starts to show a specific preference for a caregiver.
What is multiple attachment?
10 plus months; Growing bonds with other caregivers.
What is monotropy?
A child has an innate need to attach to one main attachment figure.
What is the critical period?
( 2.5 years ) If an attachment has not developed during this period, then it may well not happen at all.
What is Bowlby’s maternal deprivation hypothesis?
This suggests that the constant disruption of attachment between the primary main figure and the child may lead to the child’s development in areas such as cognitive, social, physical, and somehow mental. This may lead to further problems such as delinquency, depression, increased aggression, and reduced intelligence.
What are internal working models?
When a child develops a view of themselves about others, this may affect the way that they socialize or present themselves to others.
What are the 3 main stages of separation anxiety?
-Protest
-Despair
- Detachment
What are the criticisms of Bowlby’s work?
-The role of the mothers was overemphasised
- Attachments to more than one person were not explored.
- The quality of substitute care wasn’t taken into consideration.
