A
- followed 2008 finical crisis that took place when Gordon brown was PM & gave conservatives a means to attack his policies
- brown was unpopular for not calling a general election when he took over as PM in 2007
- voters didn’t clearly support conservatives over Labour, with polls suggesting 29% of voters favours conservatives for managing the economy compared to 26% labour

A
- TV debates were held with the main party leaders (Clegg, Brown, Cameron)
- Clegg performed well and saw increases in option polls after the first debate & Brown seemed to have performed worse
- Conservatives targeted marginal seats & tested polices with voter while Labour had a weak campaign
- Brown was heard calling a voter a ‘bigoted woman’ after asking about immigration
