- when the liberal and the social Democratic Party merged in 1988

Developments of the Lib Dem’s
A
- tried to be a middle ground between labour&conservatives but with polices focusing on reform
- in 1990s the party started to won by-elections and increasing support in local elections
- in 1997 the Lib Dem’s won 46 seats
- decline in popularity after 2006, then Nick Clegg became leader in 2007

- argues for limited state intervention & advocates equality, tolerance and freedom
- proposes that the best way to improve people’s live hoods is through self-improvement rather than through the state playing a role

- advocates for the need more more state intervention by introducing regulation of the market and providing welfare for people

- the Lib Dem’s gained more support in the 2010 election & neck Clegg was a popular figure

- joined conservatives in 2010 coalition
- meant they broke promises like not to increase Tuition fees
- blocked some conservative policies - such as inheritance tax cuts

- welfare - fairer benefits system, reversing conservative policies that cut befits for some people
- foreign policy - controlling sales of arms to counties with human rights abuses
