A
  • held in response to pressures over particular issues
  • eg the EU refundum 2016 promised by Cameron
  • can be called to ensure significant gov initiatives have public approval
  • eg 1997 devolution referendums
  • can be a result of a deal made between political parties
  • eg the 2011 AV electoral system referendum (lib dems & conservative)

  • 1998 referendum votes in favour of devolving power to Northern Ireland & establishing a London Mayor & assembly
  • 2004 regions in England voted on regional assemblies, the NorthEast o England rejected an assembly, 78% against the proposal
