Volcanoes Flashcards
What is a ‘Super Volcano’?
A volcano which is capable of erupting on a much bigger scale than a normal volcano
What are the two types of volcanoes?
Shield and Composite
What are ‘Composite Volcanoes’?
Composite volcanoes are much more explosive than shield volcanoes, the other important type of volcano,
Where do composite volcanoes form?
The large and generally come shaped volcanoes form along plate boundaries called subduction zones
What happens at ‘Subduction Zones’?
One of the Earth’s plates moves below another
What is the formation of the ‘Composite Volcanoes’?
Trapped sea water and ocean sediment is added to this molten mix which it turn melts the overlying continental crust
In Composite Volcanoes what do these magma plumes do?
They rise to the surface and form chain of volcanoes
Compared to other volcanoes, what are Composite Volcanoes like?
They are more viscous as they contain more silica than that of a shield volcano
What does this stickiness do?
It ‘plugs up’ the volcano which causes the pressure to build up which results in a explosive, dangerous eruption
