Characteristics SV Flashcards
How does a super volcano look different to a normal volcano?
Because it often doesn’t have a peak or cone
How is a supervolcano formed?
The magma is blocked from reaching the earth’s surface
The pressure begins to build up, more rock melts and more magma is formed
What happens in a SV after more magma is formed?
The pressure then builds up and when it becomes too much, the entire surface above the magma chamber is blown away by a huge explosion
What is formed from this huge explosion?
A caldera
What would happen if there was a super volcano at Yellowstone?
An eruption is likely to destroy 10,000km of land, kill 87,000 people and then 15cm of ash would cover buildings within 1,000km which would then effect 1 in 3 people
