Population Pyramids Flashcards
What do ‘Population Pyramids’ show?
They show in the form of a graph the percentage, or number, of males and females in each age group
What do Population Pyramids reflect?
They reflect the structure of the population in terms of for example the number of babies being born and the number dying
What does the wide base represent?
A lot of young people in the population
Give an example of a country which has a changing population structure
Mexico, because it has a large youthful population. Under 15’s make up 31% of the population
Why is Mexico’s population structure slowly starting to change?
- Because it has now managed to achieve a much lower death rate, just 4.78 deaths per 1000
- People are living longer as well due to more childhood vaccinations being introduced
Why are childhood vaccinations being introduced?
To reduce infant mortality, which is the number of children who die before the age of 1
How long is it expected to take before Mexico’s population levels out?
At least 50 years. Today’s young people will then be moving into old age
