Bringing in a one child policy
Why was China’s population seen as unsustainable?
Because during the 1950 and 60’s China’s population grew rapidly

They didn’t have enough food and water and energy to provide
When was the one child policy brought in?
In 1970 to limit population growth
Couples who only had one child received what?
Financial rewards and welfare benefits
Has China’s policy led to sustainable development?
China’s one child policy has prevented around 300 million babies being born
- So it’s population now and going into the future is lower than it would of been
Why has the policy been controversial?
- Women were forced to have abortions as late as the ninth month of pregnancy
- Women were placed under tremendous pressure from their families
- Local officials and central government had power over people’s private lives
So has China’s policy really led to sustainable development?
No because
- The policy is still disobeyed by many who are then severely penalised
- China’s future generation is in trouble which has been caused by the policy
- It is estimated women will be outnumbered by men by 30 million by 2020
