Population - Definitions + DTM Flashcards
What is ‘Birth Rate’?
The number of babies born per 1,000 people per year
What is the ‘Death Rate’?
The number of deaths per 1,000 people per year
What is ‘Natural Increase’?
The birth rate exceeds the death rate
What is ‘Life Expectancy’?
The number of years a person is expected to live, usually taken from birth
What is the ‘Demographic Transition Model’?
A simple way of looking at how the population has changed
What happens at Stage 1 of the ‘Demographic Transition Model’?
The death rate is high because of famine, disease
The birth rate is high due to a lack of birth control
Which means that natural increase is low and population doesn’t increase much
What happens at Stage 2?
Death rate is starting to fall because of improved medicine
Birth rate is still high for same reasons as stage 1
Which means that natural increase is high so population increases quickly
Then what happens at stage 3?
Birth rate is still falling for same reason as stage 2
Birth rate s starting to fall because birth control is now available
This means that there is some natural increase but it’s lower than it was
Why is stage 3 is natural increase lower than it was?
Because the overall population is slowing down
What then takes place at Stage 4?
Birth rate remains low because of birth control
Death rate remains low
Which means that there is little or no natural increase
