Where do most volcanoes occur
At destructive or constructive plate boundaries or hot spots
What causes volcanoes to erupt
Due to earthquakes underneath the surface or too much pressure can build up
Benefits of volcanoes
Volcanoes and areas near them can be used to produce geothermal energy, tourist attractions, and they can form islands for people to live on
Volcano dangers
Pyroclastic flow (super hot avalanche). Volcanic tephra ‘bomb’, lava flow, lahar volcanic mud flow.
Monitoring volcanoes
Scientists use tilt meters, lasers, seismographs (all called precursors) they also look for bulges, patterns of earthquakes and changing gas levels. They use this data to create hazard maps so people can evacuate safely (people don’t always listen eg mt St. Helens 61 people tragically died.
