Tsunamis Flashcards
Causes of tsunamis
An underwater earthquake occurs, the seafloor snaps up lifting a column of water above it, gravity pulls the water back down fanning the waves outward, individual waves the tsunami spread out wavelength can be thousands of kilometres wide, then the tide draws back, friction in the seabed causes it to slow down the faster water arriving behind it piles in & pushes the wave much higher the tsunami hits land
Tsunami prevention
Today a network of warning boys are positioned in the Indian and Pacific ocean to detect any tsunami waves these then send a signal to land and a siren goes off then go to high ground, trees are on beaches to slow it down and there are also walls to block it
