Structure Of The Earth Flashcards
How many layers does the earth have
4
Crust
Solid layer of rock on the surface of the planet. Thickness varies from 3-30miles, 1% of the earths volume
Mantle
Semi liquid layer of magma/molten rock. Move due to convection currents
Outer core
Liquid part of the core has a similar composition to the inner core
Inner core
Solid part, centre of the earth, made up of iron and nickel, temperatures reaching 5500 degrees
Spreading/constructive ⬅️➡️
Ocean plates move away creating a gap between them eg mid Atlantic ridge, this causes volcanic activity eg Iceland
➡️↘️⬅️ destructive/sink
Ocean plate sinks below another on at a subduction zone eg ocean trench, this causes earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis eg mount merapi Indonesia
➡️⬅️collision zones/ crash
2 continental plates move together eg Mount Everest, cause earthquakes eg Himalayas
Conservative/slip ⬆️⬇️
2 plates slide past each other eg faults causes earthquakes eg San Andreas fault California
