Earthquakes Flashcards
How do earthquakes occur
They usually occur without warning when pressure is suddenly released. The sudden movement of earth’s tectonic plates that cause them
Fault line
Weakness in the crust plate boundary where movement occurs
Focus
Point inside the earths crust where the crust breaks and presssure is suddenly released.
Epicentre
Point on the surface directly above the focus. Where the earthquake is the strongest and the most damage occurs
Short-term effects of earthquakes
Transport disruption, fires, gas pipe explosions,
Long-term effects of earthquakes
90% of ships births destroyed, financial loss, roads & railways damaged, people unemployed, electricity and gas networks disrupted
Prevention of earthquakes
Pumping water into known fault zones allows them to slip more freely
Avoidance
Mapping hazards zones so no one new lives there
Disaster management
Stockpiling resources e.g. plan drills/earthquake proof buildings
