Voice - Phonotrauma Flashcards
Describe harsh/hard glottal attack
manner of initiating vowels by rapid and complete adduction of VF prior to initiation of phonation
- lots of tension
Describe high laryngeal position
greater laryngeal elevation to increase pitch level – people tend to overuse a higher pitch which leads to pain or soreness in neck, worsening voice throughout day
describe anteroposterior laryngeal squeezing
the epiglottis and arytenoids approach each other during phonation abnormally
Define Voice Disorder.
when voice quality, pitch and loudness differ or are inappropriate for an individual’s age, gender, cultural background, or geographic location
What are organic voice disorders?
physiological in nature and result from alterations in respiratory, laryngeal, or vocal tract mechanisms
What are 2 types of organic voice disorders?
structural: physical changes in vocal mechanism (edema or nodules)
neurogenic: problems with CNS or PNS innervation to larynx (vocal tremor, VF paralysis)
What are functional voice disorders?
result from improper or inefficient use of the vocal mechanism when physical structure is normal (fatigue, tension)
what are the 9 primary symptoms of voice problems?
- hoarseness
- vocal fatigue
- breathy voice
- reduced pitch range
- aphonia
- pitch breaks
- strain
- tremor
- pain
perceptual pitch signs of voice problem
monopitch
pitch breaks
inappropriate pitch
reduced pitch range
perceptual loudness signs of voice problem
monoloudness
loudness variation
perceptual quality signs of voice problem
hoarse
breathy
tension
tremor
strain
interruption of voicing
diplophonia - double voice
