Voice Disorders Management Flashcards
When conducting voice therapy, an SLP must consider
absenteeism, adherence, and a client’s self-efficacy
Given that individuals with voice therapy are likely to not attend therapy and/or adhere to therapy, what can SLPs do?
Educate the patient on why voice therapy maters; schedule the patient’s therapy session as soon as possible; use empowering and non-judgemental language
What factors contribute to a patient not adhering to voice therapy and absenteeism?
the rapport between the client and patient; family support and cultural norms; clinician’s engagement at the first meeting; how severe the patient views their voice issues; the patient’s self-efficacy
What are the primary causes of clients not adhering to voice therapy?
Distance to the clinic, not having insurance coverage, and acceptance of the problem
When is a patient more likely to complete therapy?
The more times they attended sessions
When is a patient less likely to complete therapy?
the more weeks they delay the start of treatment
What are the two types of treatment approaches with voice therapy?
direct approaches and indirect approaches
What is the goal of direct approach to treating voice disorders?
to change vocal behaviors and establish healthy voice production
What is the goal of indirect approach to treating voice disorders?
to change cognitive, behavioural, psychological, and phyiscal environments
With the direct approach to voice disorder treatment, an SLP focuses on
manpulating the following systems (phonation, respiration, and musculoskeletal function); a holistic approach can be incorporated too.
With the indirect approach to voice disorder treatment, an SLP focuses on
educating and counseling the patient on vocal misues; discussing ways to keep your voice healthy and manage stress
What are the physiologic voice therapy methods?
Resonant voice therapy, semi-occluded vocal tract exercises
, accent method, conversion training therapy; vocal function therapy; accent method; vocal function exercises along with RVT
What is the purpose of physiologic voice therapy?
To restore balance of the three subsystems of voice production: respiration, phonation, and resonance
What is the purpose of resonant voice therapy?
to achieve a resonant voice through middle ground laryngeal adduction; this approach addresses a pressed voice or a breathy voice
What is the purpose of semi-occluded vocal tract exercises?
to reduce tension and to train someone to use less energy to produce. It can also help someone achieve resonant voice. It works by a person speaking through a straw which raises the air pressure above the vocal folds and reduces the impact collison force.
What are vocal function exercises?
one physiologic voice method that strengthens and coordinates laryngeal muscles, thereby making them efficient.
What are manual circumlaryngeal techniques?
a physiologic voice method that reduces tension in the musculoskeletal system and hyperfunction by massaging different parts of the larynx.
What is the accent method?
a physiologic voice method that uses pulsed abdominal breaths to spur glottal closure and ultimately create a new breathing pattern and voice pattern
Which symptomatic voice therapy techniques can be used to target pitch?
chant talk and yawn sigh
Which symptomatic voice therapy technique can be used to target intensity?
amplification
Which symptomatic voice therapy technique can be used to spur self-awareness in a client?
Biofeedback
Which symptomatic voice therapy technique can be used to reduce using lots of effort to produce voice?
Relaxation (whole-body and laryngeal tension)
What is the purpose of symptomatic voice therapy?
address particular voice symptoms (e.g., glottal fry, breathiness, pitch breaks, reduced loudness) and change them
Examples of symptomatic voice therapies are
biofeedback, relaxation, amplification, yawn-sigh, chant-talk
How can an SLP ensure a client adheres to therapy, thereby hindering abseenteism?
educate the patient on why voice therapy matters; use language that is empowering and non-judgemental (e.g., muscle tension instead of vocal abuse/misuse); schedule time as early as possible for an evaluation
What are conversation training techniques?
a physiologic voice therapy approach in which voice goals are addressed in the context of a naturalistic conversation; techniques include prosody, clear speech, basic gestures, negative practice, awareness of hearing and body movement
What are unhygenic vocal behaviors?
Coughing/throat clearing, speaking loudly, yelling, unconventional sounds (like animal noises), hard glottal attacks, glottal fry, singing at a range that is not comfortable for you, speaking during strenuous exercise
