Vocabulary Two Flashcards
Greenhouse effect
The phenomenon whereby the earth’s atmosphere traps solar radiation, caused by the presence in the atmosphere of gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane
Global warming
An increase in the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere, especially a sustained increase sufficient to cause climate change
Conduction
The transfer of heat through direct contact of materials of different temperature
Mesosphere
The layer of the atmosphere between the stratosphere and thermosphere in which temperature decrease as altitude increases
Air pressure
The measure of the force with which air molecules push on a surface
Ozone
A form of oxygen gas, absorbs ultraviolet rays from the sun and then releases some of this energy in the form of heat
Atmosphere
A mixture of gases that surround the earth
Radiation
The transfer of energy through matter or space as electromagnetic waves (viable light or infrared)
Troposphere
The lowest layer of the atmosphere in which temperature decreases at a constant rate as altitude increases
Stratosphere
The layer of the atmosphere that is above the troposphere and in which temperatures increase as altitudes increase
Thermosphere
Upper most layer of the Earth’s atmosphere; has two layers ionosphere and exosphere
Convection
The transfer of heat thru the movement of a fluid, either a gas or liquid
Altitude
Heigh above the sea level or the earths surface
People and cars are in which atmosphere
Troposhere
Planes and clouds are in which atmosphere?
stratosphere
Meteors and the moon are in which atmosphere?
Mesosphere
The sun and planets are in which atmosphere?
Thermosphere
Volcanic eruption
When a volcano shoot gases and huge amounts of ash into the atmosphere
Facts about water cycle
Water from a lake or ocean turns or changes into gas and returns to the atmosphere and comes down as rain
How does the atmosphere make life possible?
The gases of the atmosphere keep earth warm and transport r grey to different regions of the planet
Which gas is the most common material in the air around you?
Nitrogen
Name 4 ways that the atmosphere can effect light?
Let’s it pass through
Absorbs
Reflects
Gives it off
Horse latitudes
Calm regions of high-pressure zones located about 30 degrees north and 30degrees south of the equator
Easterlies
Wind beats that blow from the east moving from the polar regions towards the mid-latitudes
