Nov Test Flashcards
What are the four characteristics common to all living things?
Organs
reproduce
develop
respond
Name the organelles that can be found in both plant and animal cells
Cell membrane/ nucleus
Give an example of a prokaryotic organism
Bacteria
Who were the scientist who first used microscopes to see living cells?
Robert Hook
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
What is the smallest unit in the level of organization that can perform basic activities of life?
The cell - tissue - organ
Name the in structures common to only plant cells
Central vacuole
Chloroplast
Cell wall
List the three parts of the cell theory
Everything is made up of 1 or more cells. Cells carry out the functions needed to support life. Cells come only from other living cells
Give the functions of following organelles
A- cytoplasm B- cell membrane C- chloroplast D- mitochondrial E- cell wall F- vacuole G- ribosome
Light Microscope
• lenses are used to bend light and make objects appear bigger than they are
• can magnify objects up to 1000 times.
One important advantage of light • microscopes is that scientists can observe living cells with them.
Electron microscope
There are two types. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the transmission electron microscope (TEM) can produce images of objects as small as 0.002 micrometers.
• The advantage of these microscopes is that they can magnify objects up to a million times.
The disadvantage is that they cannot be used to study living specimens.
