Assembly elected by the people that makes laws in a responsible gov’t
Executive
The CHIEF officer of a govt, state or political division
Judicial
Allowed by a court of law (judicial decision)
Representative Govt
Govt officials elected to office by voters
Responsible Govt
Govt subject to the votes of the people.
Colony
The overseas possession of another country that governs and uses it for its own purposes.
Upper Canada
British Colony - mostly ENGLISH speaking
Lower Canada
British Colony - mostly FRENCH speaking
Class System
Society where people born into privileged families have rights and advantages that others don’t.
Family Compact
The small group of wealthy elite who controlled govt in Upper Canada.
Chateau Clique
The wealthy elite who controlled Lower Canada. Mostly made up of ENGLISH speaking merchants! In a French speaking colony.
Land speculators
People who bought land at a low price to sell it when the value went up. Often borrowed money.
Francophone
French speaking person
Anglophone
English speaking person
Metis
Of both Aboriginal and European descent.
Loyalist
Americans who did support the American Revolution. Many moved to British Colonies.
Gentry
The upper class in Britain
Barter economy
Economy based on trading services and products.
Coffin Ship
A death ship; disease and death were common on cargo vessels used to carry passengers in the early 1800s. (1815)
Underground railway
Network of trails and “safe houses” leading to Canada.
