Why was America a real threat to Canada?
Civil War made them ready to fight with a large army. Canada had little defence. Fenian Raids threatened Canada.
Why did America threaten To take Canada?
Britain had sided and traded with the losing South side of the US in their civil war, angering the North. US had the idea of Manifest Destiny. Fenian Raids were to scare Canada.
Why was rep by pop. Important?
This was important to break the political deadlock in decisions where Ontario and Quebec disagreed. Because Ontario was more populated, they would gain more seats in the HoC. Canada need Double Majority even though Canada West had a bigger population.
What did Canada lose from Britain? From US?
Their trade relationship and the British Navy. NAFTA lost with US. They needed new markets (pacific port and inter colonial railway to access ice free port in Halifax NS).
Why did Britain support Canada’s confederation?
They saw Canada as an expense to defend and upkeep.
What would help protect Canada from the US?
Confederation, Federal Gov’t (Central and Provincial Govts), CPR, the defense bill, purchase of Hudson’s bay company land (more settlers would mean higher population and easier to defend),
What was Manifest Destiny?
American belief that it was the FATE of the US to control all of North America.
