What is a language disorder?
issue with understanding and/or using spoken and/or written symbol systems for any or all aspects of language (i.e., form, content, and use)
What is linguistic competence?
knowledge of language rules
What is linguistic performance?
the speaker’s actual use of language
What is metalinguistic competence?
being able to think and talk about language when out of context
What are paralinguistic mechanisms?
mechanisms beside language that convey emotion namely duration, rhythm, intonation, prosody, and stress
What is morphology?
the system that controls how words are structured and how word forms are created.
What are the five developmental domains?
social-emotional, communication, cognition, fine and gross motor skills, and sensory
What is syntax?
a system that controls how words are put together to form sentences and the relationship of those elements to each other.
What is semantics?
a system that deals with the meaning of words and the associations between words
What is pragmatics?
system that combines syntax, semantics, morphology, and phonology into functional communication in social situations
