Pre-linguistic communication and development Flashcards
What are ways to stimulate communication in toddlers?
develop anticipatory sets, turn-taking, imitation, and establishing joint attention
What is the muddy area?
a stage where children move from the pre-linguistic stage to the linguistic stage (i.e., they begin to use words to label their environment); occurs around 12 - 18 months
What is the pre-intentional communication stage?
a stage, at 0 to 8 months of age, where infants behave and their behavior communicates a message to the listener, but they are unaware of this effect
What is the first part of the intentional communication stage?
a stage in an infant’s communication development, around 8 to 9 months, where they communicate with purpose and coordinated attention emerges
What are the stages of intentionality?
perlocutionary, illocutionary, and locutionary
Which stage of intentionality is pre-intentional?
perlocutionary
Which stage of intentionality is intentional and pre-linguistic?
illocutionary
Which stage of intentionality is intentional and linguistic?
locutionary
When assessing a child for pre-linguistic communication, you must review the following,
parent’s communication to their child, feeding and oral-motor abilities, medical history, family structure and concerns, vocal behavior, infant behavior, physical ability, infant readiness and needs (being able to maintain a quiet and alert state)
What is plagiocephaly?
flat head syndrome
What is torticollis?
wry neck (abnormal or asymmetrical head and neck position
At 18 months, a typically developing toddler communicates at
an average of 2 communicative acts per minute
At 24 months, a typically developing toddler communicates at
an average of 5 communicative acts per minute
At 18 months a typically developing toddler uses
2 word combinations
At 24 months, a typically developing toddler uses
10 different consonants
In assessing pre-linguistic communication of infants, what is known about NICU-based services?
NICU-based services are given under a treatment plan while under medical supervision
What do we know about infant behavior?
generally disorganized; unable to maintain homeostasis by themselves;
What do we know about the behavior of at-risk children?
medical fragility, poor sensory integration (hypo or hyper sensitive), cannot learn effectively if they can’t achieve homeostasis
What is homeostasis?
being able to maintain internal state
When working on an infant’s prelinguistic communication, do not do the following:
focus on mastery of articulation or phonology; expect perfection; forget that they may need an AAC device; think that significant change happens quickly.
