Vocabulary Flashcards
Chemical Reaction
a chemical reaction is when a substance undergoes a change, and the atoms rearrange to form a new substance (product)
Evidence of a Chemical Reaction
color change, gas (bubbles or new smell), heat given off or heat taken in, precipitate (solid that was not there created) forms
Substance
a form of matter with a unique composition and distinct properties
Analysis
to break down into small parts or components
observation
something you can see, hear, touch, taste, smell (except no tasting)
Inference
hypothesis (educated guess) about your observations - DOES NOT belong in evidence/data
Property
something that can be observed or measured, used to describe something
Physical Property
something that can be observed or measured without changing the substance into another substance (ex: mass, color, texture, melting point, can be molded)
Physical Change
affects the physical properties of a substance, but not its chemical makeup. signs of a phys. change include a change in texture, state of matter, and shape
Chemical Property
describes how an element can combine or react with another element, its ability to undergo a chemical reaction (rusting, combustion/burning) this change is IRREVERSIBLE
Quantitative Data
numerical measurements; data in numerical form
qualitative data
descriptive observations of properties of a substance
Element
a basic substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances during chemical reactions
matter
anything that has mass and takes up space/volume
Law of Conservation of Mass/Matter
in a chemical reaction, matter cannot be created or destroyed. the elements are only rearranged
