Vocab - Computer Functions (Strand 6) Flashcards
Hardware
Physical components of a computer.
Software
Applications that tell hardware how to operate, like the operating system, graphics programs, video/music players, internet browsers.
Data
0’s and 1’s. These bits of information make up the documents and images you save.
User
You, the person interacting with the Hardware and software.
Motherboard
Hardware that acts as a central hub for all other hardware to connect and interact with.
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Brain of your computer. Processes data and instructions from all other hardware in your computer system.
Random Access Memory (RAM)
Temporary and volatile storage that houses the actively running data on your computer. Not a long a long term storage, when powered off the data not saved will be lost.
Read-only Memory (ROM)
The permanent information stored on your motherboard or on removable storage that cannot be changed or erased.
Hard Drive
Long term storage device where all data is saved to.
Measurement of Data
Bit - a single 0 or 1 Byte - 8 bits Kilobyte - 1024 bytes Megabyte - 1024 kb (1,048,576 bytes) Gigabyte - 1024 mb (1,073,741,824 bytes) Terabyte - 1024 gb (1,099,511,627,776 bytes)
Graphics Processing Unit (GPU or Video Card)
Added to a computer to accelerate the processing of image and video information.
Input Devices
Devices give the computer data such as text, photos, drawings, etc. (keyboard, mouse, scanner, webcam)
Output Devices
Devices display or deliver that data in some form. (monitor, printer, speakers)
Scanner
a device that captures images from paper source and creates a digital copy
Operating System
The software that tells your hardware what to do and how to do it. Examples are Windows and Mac OS.
