Agape
Greek word meaning love adopted by Christians to refer to Jesus’ sacrificial and generous love of others
Autonomous Christian Ethics
This means that ethics are self-governed. Auto = self and nomos = law or rule
Bible/Scripture
The collection or canon of books in the Bible that contain the revelation of God
Church Tradition
Traditions of how Christian life in the community work (worship, moral life, prayer etc.)
Covenant
God’s special promises and agreement with humans requires special behaviour from them
Heteronomous Christian Ethics
This means that ethics are governed by several sources of authority or law. Heteros = several and nomos = law or rule
Intrinsic
Means in itself, a moral duty which is considered intrinsically good because it is an aspect of nature or God has commanded it
Magisterium
“Magisterium of the Pastors of the Church” – the official and authentic teaching of the Church
Papal Encyclical
Letter issued by the Pope to his senior clergy on a significant topic or teaching. It is considered to have doctrinal authority
Sacred Tradition
The idea that the revelation of Jesus Christ is communicated in two ways:
Scripture
Apostolic and authoritative teaching of the Church councils and the Pope
Theonomous Christian Ethics
Ethics is governed by God’s law or commands. Theos = God and Nomos = law or rule
