Meta ethics Flashcards
What is Meta-ethics?
branch of moral philosophy that is concerned with what is good, by dealing with language and meanings
What are meta-physics?
asks the question of if words like ‘good’ and ‘bad’ pick out any objective qualities? or is it just a matter of personal taste or opinion?
What is epistemology?
how do we acquire knowledge and what does it consist of?
Key question in meta ethics?
can ethical statements have any meaning?
Two parts of meta ethics
Cognitive and Non cognitive
What is the Cognitive Approach?
also referred to as moral realism, argues moral claims are making reference to facts about the world.
What is the Non Cognitive Approach?
also referred to as moral non-realism, certain statements are not referring to the world and so are not capable of being true or false in any real sense. There are no moral facts, and no moral knowledge.
What is absolutism?
the idea that some truths are obligatory, fixed, and there are underlying, innate principles
What is relativism?
the idea that moral truths are not absolute or fixed, the idea of right and wrong is situational
What is Naturalism?
the belief that values can be defined in terms of some natural property in the world
What is Intuitionism?
the belief that basic moral truths are indefinable but self evident
What is Emotivism?
the belief that ethical terms evince approval or disapproval
