VMB : Bacillus Flashcards
Bacillus are gram what
Bacillus is positive.. Kinda sound like zealous so it’s positive yeh
Bacillus are gram positive except
Bacillus macquarensis
Are they spore forming, true or false
True
Bacillus are motile with the aid of peritrichous flagella except
Bacillus anthracis
Bacillus Megaterium is associated with
Food poisoning
Which Bacillus is used for biological pest control
Bacillus thuringiensis
Bacillus ___ is associated with food poisoning
Megaterium
Bacillus ___ is associated with food poisoning
Megaterium
Anthrax occurs when bacillus anthracis endospore enter a host through ___ and ___
Inhalation, ingestion, abrasion on the skin
Anthrax occurs when bacillus anthracis endospore enter a host through ___ and ___
Inhalation, ingestion, abrasion on the skin
Bacillus __ can cause anthrax
Anthracis
Bacillus anthracis virulence depends on
Production of capsules and spores
What is a symptom of anthracis
The blood is dark, tarry and non clotting with bleeding from natural orifices
What is a symptom of anthracis
The blood is dark, tarry and non clotting with bleeding from natural orifices
Horses that have anthrax have what symptoms
Colic, diarrhoea,oedema
Swine bacillus anthracis manifest as
Localized pharyngeal infection with regional lymphadenitis, ulcerative enteritis and mesenteric lymphadenitis may occur
Human symptoms of anthracis
Infection through the skin produces Malignant carbuncles or pustules
Through inhalation produces pulmonary edema, haemorrhagic pneumonia and meningitis
Anthrax can be demonstrated by what stains
McFadyean or Giemsa or Wright stain
Anthrax can be demonstrated by what stains
McFadyean or Giemsa or Wright stain
McFadyean reaction gives
Bluish rod surrouded by pink and purple capsule💦
McFadyean reaction
Bluish rod surrouded by purplish pink capsule
The organisms may appear singly or in pairs or long chains with unstained central areas representing spores

Steps involved in culturing anthracis
- Homogenize tissue using physiological saline or broth as a diluent
- Inoculate blood agar from suspension, blood, swaps and biopsies
3.inoculate aerobically at 37°C For 24 hours - Large flat and rough colonies with irregular edges which are usually non hemolytic
- Some areas called medusa head type or judges wig type colonies
On nutrient agar colonies are dull, opaque and grayish white with irregular borders 🌚💀

Selective agar for Bacillus anthracis
PLET
Polymyxin lysozyme EDTA thallous acetate

Septicemia
Bacillus cereus produces two types of toxin?
Diarrhoeal and emetic
Name two selective media for Bacillus cereus
Kim and Goepfert (KG) agar
Mannitol egg yolk polymyxin agar MYP
What appearance is Bacillus colony
Medusa head or judge head
