Q

vine-training general spacing

high
low
close
far-apart

A

high - initial growth let climb higher to aid in airflow and sun exposure

low - less temperature moderation, cooler. good for hotter or more windy climates

close: more competition, less yield, more intense flavors.

far-apart: in nutrient poor soils. all vines have enough to share.

Q

vine-training styles

head-training
(cane pruning)
canes shoot out of the main head

cordon-training
(spur pruning)
spurs are the bumps that create new buds

A

head-training: each year trimmed back to the vertical trunk i.e. guyot, goblet (shoots kept short and stout bushes). each year grower has to decide what 10% will not be sawed-off

cordon-training - cordon extends to branches which keep growing. each year gower has to manage spacing of spurs (places where new growth come out of)
