Q

What is the name of thiamine deficiency and how does it effect the body?

A

16
Q

What is the name of vitamins B12?

A

Cobalamin

17
Q

What is the source of cobalamin?

A

Microorganisms such as meat, fish, shell fish and poultry.

18
Q

What are the effects of the defective absorption of vitamin B12?

A

Achlorhydria - absence of HCL in stomach therefore no hydrolysis of cobalamin. This leads to diseases such as Sprue - deficient absorption of food due to diseased SI.

19
Q

What are the symptoms of tropical sprue?

A
  • Diarrhoea
  • Weight loss
  • Inflamed tongue
  • Anaemia
  • Infection
20
Q

Symptoms of cobalamin deficiency?

A
  • Megaloblastic anaemia

- Neurological disorders - paraesthesia

21
Q

What is Megaloblastic anaemia?

A

Deficiency in cobalamin –> Blood cells to large and cannot enter bloodstream –> Anaemia

22
Q

Symptoms of Anaemia.

A
  • Fatigue
  • Breathlessness
  • Pallor
23
Q

What are the two forms of Vitamin A?

A

Retinol - Liver and eggs

Retinal - Carrots and spinach

24
Q

Why do we need vitamin A?

A
  • Required for visual pigment - Rhodopsin

- Normal brain development
