Q

What dose energetics dictate?

A

Dictates rates and equilibrium positions of reactions, therefore to study metabolism you need to understand energetics.

What is a closed hydroelectric system?

A

Flowing water drives generator only until system reaches equilibrium.

Q

What is an open hydroelectric system?

A

Flowing water keeps driving generator because intake/outflow of water keeps system from reaching equilibrium.

Q

First law of Thermodynamics.

A

The law of conservation of energy. Isolated system - energy remains constant irrespective of process. Energy cannot be destroyed only transported.

Q

What is Enthalpy?

A

Energy can be added to a closed system by heat and work. Adding heat or work increases total energy/enthalpy. Total change in enthalpy, go from initial to final state independent of path taken.

Q

What is the second law of thermodynamics?

A

When energy is converted from one to another, some energy becomes unavailable to do work.

Q

What is entropy?

A

Measure of disorder and unavailable energy in a system - energy dispersal. Process can be driven by a change in entropy e.g heat transfer.

16
Q

What influences delta G?

A
  • Entropy
  • Temperature
  • Concentration of components
17
Q

What are the two strategies to make reaction proceed in specific direction?

A
  1. Alter concentration so that delta G becomes negative.

2. Couple reaction with positive delta G value to negative so overall value in negative.
