Vitamins Flashcards
What are vitamins?
Vitamins are organic compounds that re required in small quantities as they cannot be synthesised in the human body.
They are categorised according to their solubility in water or fat.
What vitamins are water soluble vitamins?
Vitamin C and 8 different B-group vitamins
What is the function of water soluble vitamins?
They help to catalyse cellular reactions through being absorbed directly into the bloodstream.
What functional groups do water soluble contain?
Any functional group that contains nitrogen and oxygen. For example, amide and amine.
True or False: The nervous system relies on B-group vitamins to be able to function effectively?
True
What vitamins are fat soluble vitamins?
Vitamins A,D,E and K and they are stored in the liver in fat deposits
In what part of the human body are the fat soluble vitamins absorbed?
Absorbed in the intestines
Why can fat soluble vitamins become toxic?
They can become toxic due to the build up
Are water soluble vitamins more stable than fat soluble vitamins?
No.
Fat soluble vitamins are more stable due to heat
True or false: Fat soluble vitamins mainly consist of carbon and hydrogen and therefore form non polar molecules.
True.
This means that they contain non polar molecules making them more soluble in non polar solvents such as fats and oils.
What are essential vitamins?
Essential vitamins cannot be synthesised by the human body, so these nutrients must be obtained from food. For example, these include vitamin A, C, D, E, K, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, pantothenic acid, biotin and folic acid.
What are non essential vitamins?
Non essential vitamins can be synthesised by the human body.
