Carbohydrates Flashcards
what is a monosaccharide?
it is a simple sugar that is made of a number of functional groups. Monosaccharides all have several hydroxyl functional group present and therefore are all highly soluble in water.
what are the 3 monosaccharides
Glucose, Fructose, and Galactose
where is glucose found?
Glucose is found in all living things
where is fructose found?
Fructose is found mainly in fruit and honey and is 1.7 times sweeter than regular sugar
what are disaccharides?
Disaccharides are two monosaccharides that have bonded through a condensation reaction, with water being produced as a result.
what is the change in the structure of the monosaccharides then they undergo a condensation reaction and become a disaccharide?
The only change to the structure of the monosaccharide is at the hydroxyl functional group, which then becomes the glycosidic link.
what are the 3 most important disaccharides?
Maltose, Lactose, and Sucrose
what 2 monosaccharides combine to create Maltose?
Maltose is formed by the condensation reaction of glucose and glucose
what 2 monosaccharides combine to create Lactose?
Lactose is formed by the condensation reaction of glucose and galactose
what 2 monosaccharides combine to create Sucrose?
Sucrose is formed by the condensation reaction of glucose and fructose
what is another name for a Polysaccharide?
Polysaccharides are also called complex carbohydrates
