BeriBeri disease
Wernicke’s encephalopathy
What is the difference between wet and dry BeriBeri disease
Wet: pain, paresthesias, peripheral edema, peripheral neuritis, >3 month Vit B1 deficiency
Dry: symmetric peripheral neuropathy, affects mostly legs
What is Wernicke’s encephalopathy
Horizontal nystagmus, weakness in extraoccular movements, cerebellar ataxia, mental impairment can progress to memory loss and psychosis
Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) deficiency treatment plan
Thiamine 200mg IV TID until improvement of symptoms, then transition to 10mg QD po dosing
Always treat alcoholics to avoid lactic acidosis
What are sources of Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)
Yeast, organ meat, pork, legumes, beef, whole grains, nuts
