Vital Signs Respirations Flashcards
What is respiration?
This is the means by which the body gains oxygen and excretes CO2
Inspiration and expiration = 1 respiration
When do respiratory changes occur?
Occur when the respiratory centres receives information from:
- stretch receptors in the lung
- chemoreceptors in the aortic arch and carotid arteries that monitor oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood
What is the physiology of respiration?
Ventilation- drawing breath in
Gaseous exchange
Internal respiration - measurement of CO2 from cells into blood and movement of O2 into blood cells.
What do we assess when were looking at someone’s respiration?
Rate
Rhythm
Depth
What is the rate of resps an adult should be taking per min?
12-20
What is the rate of resps a neonate should be taking every minute?
40-60
What can cause changes in respiration?
Exercise
Emotions
Pain
Drugs
