What is entonox?
This is oxygen and and nitrous oxide gas
Easy to use and women can control it themselves
Takes about 15-20 seconds to work
What are the side effects of entenox?
- There are no harmful side affects for you or the baby
- Can make you feel light headed
- Some women find that it makes you feel sick, sleepy or unable to concentrate
What are pethidine injections?
This injection goes into your thigh or buttock
Takes 20 mins to kick in
Effects last 2-4 hours
Not recommended if your getting close to the pushing stage
What are the side effects of pethidine?
- Can make women feel woozy or sick
- If this is given to close to the delivery it may affect the babies breathing
- these drugs can interfere with the first feed
What are sterile water injections?
Small amounts of water are injected under the skin of the lower back.
They are given by two midwives at the same time
They cause an intense stinging sensation lasting for about 30 secs
Pain relief is very effective
What are the side effects of sterile water injections?
No known side effects
Water birth?
Being in the water can help relax the woman and make the contractions more bearable.
Water must not be above or below 37.5 degrees
What is a tens machine ?
Electrodes taped to your back and they give you a safe amount of current
They stimulate the body to produce more of their own natural painkillers.
