What is positioning in breast feeding?
A
This is about how the mum holds the baby to enable them to attach to the breast effectively

What are the three main principles of positioning?
A
- babies head and body is in line
- baby is held close to the mother
- nose is to the nipple

What does CHIN stand for?
A
C = close H = head free I = in line N = nose to nipple

How can we support effective breast feeding?
A
- skin contact
- CHIN is in place
- mother can calm baby
- point put the instinctive cues such as rooting and head bobbing
- mum can gently rub nipple against babies lips
- baby will come to the breast
- point out signs of effective attachment and give praise

What are some of the signs of effective attachment?
A
- Ears move up and down
- you an see more of the dark skin around the nipple at the top of your breast
- babies chin is touching your breast
- you are not feeling any pain
- you can hear baby make gulping or swallowing sounds.

What are some of the common problems associated with breast feeding?
A
- you don’t know much baby is getting
- dads don’t feel involved
- sore nipples if attachment isn’t always correct
- breast engorgement (breasts are to full)
