What is the postnatal period?
A
Period after the end of labour during which the attendance of a midwife I’d required.
This period is no less then ten days and no more then 28 days

What is the puerperium period?
A
A period of 6-8 weeks during which the reproductive organs return to pre pregnancy state and women adapt to motherhood.

Physiological changes post birth
A
- Return of pre-pregnant physiology cardiac out put returns to normal
- The relaxing effect or progesterone is reversed.
- Lochia is passed for 3-4 weeks after birth
- Lochia ruba - blood from placental site is mixed with decidua (mucous)
- Lochia serousa - becomes brownish contains Leukocytes and blood
- Lochia alba- yellowish white - cervical mucous and leukocytes

Aims of postnatal care?
A
- support women adapting to the role of motherhood
- promote and monitor woman’s and infant wellbeing
- promote and monitor women’s physiological wellbeing
- assist in establishing infant feeding
- educate women and family
- enhance confidence

Postnatal assessment of mum
Top to toe approach
A
Vital signs taken - temp, pulse, BP, Resps
- Psychological wellbeing - traumatic birth? Debrief needed? Blues? Postnatal depression?
- abdominal palpation?
- inspection of c-section wound
- Lochia check
- bladder care
- perineum- was she sutured ?
- legs
