Vital Signs Flashcards
Normal temperature
97.6 F to 99.6 F (36.4 C to 37.6 C)
Oral temperature above ______________ is considered fever.
100F (37.8C)
Rectal or Ear temperature above ______________ is considered fever.
101F (38.3C)
In a pediatric patient, the reading is considered a fever when the rectal temperature is _____________ or above.
100.4F (38C)
Normal Blood Pressure
Systolic 120/ Diastolic 80
Prehypertension stage (Blood pressure)
Systolic 120 to 139 / Diastolic 80 to 89
Hypertension stage 1
Systolic 140 to 159 / Diastolic 90 to 99
Hypertension stage 2
Systolic 160+ / Diastolic 100+
Hypertension Crisis
Systolic 180+ / Diastolic 110+
Hypotensive stage
Systolic less than 90 / Diastolic less than 60
Pulse or heart rate ranges from ___ to ___ beats per minute during the resting state.
60 to 100
Trained athletes heart rate may be closer to ___ beats per minute.
40
Tachycardia
100 bum
Bradycardia
60 bum
Respiration rate
12 to 20 rpm
A patient with readings above or below 12 to 20 also should be observed for pale, ashen or cyanotic skin that may be cold to the touch, which could indicate a potential breathing difficulty in the patient.
It is relating to the respiration
Vital signs include:
Blood pressure
Temperature
Pulse
Respiration
Blood pressure cuss should go ….
One inch above the brachial artery
When a wrong reading always wait ___ to ___ minutes to retry.
1 to 2 minutes
Temperature can be taken four ways, define.
Orally (most common)
Tympanic membrane (aurally)
Temporal artery
Axillary (underarm)
Rectal temperature should be avoided when:
Patient has hemorrhoid, rectal bleeding, or surgery a tendency of bleeding recent prostate surgery, diarrhea, colostomy, severe heart disease, or rash in rectal area
What position should a patient be placed in when taking rectal temperature?
Sim’s position- laying on left side with right leg sharply fixed, knee resting on exam table
How far should a thermometer go in rectal?
Probe should be inserted approximately one inch. If pt is less than 6 months old insert approximately 1/2 inch
How should the ear be pulled when taking aural temperature?
Adult: gently pull ear back and up to straighten the ear canal
Ages 3+: gently pull pinna (External ear) up & back
Ages -3: down and back
Anthropometric measurements
Height (nearest 1/4 in) & weight
Head circumference
Performed from birth to 3 years of age (Round to 1/2 inch or one millimeter)
To convert Celsius reading to Fahrenheit, multiply Celsius reading by 9/5 and add 32
Example:
37C * 9/5 = 66.6
(multiply 37 by 9 [333] and then divide by 5 [333/5=66.6])
66.6 + 32
=98.6F
To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 from Fahrenheit # and multiply by 5/9
Example:
- 6F - 32 = 66.6
- 6 * 5/9 (multiply 66.6 by 5 [333] and divide by 9)
= 37C
To convert pounds to kilograms:
1 pound equals 0.45 kilograms
Multiply weight in pounds by 0.45 to convert to kilograms
Example:
140lb to 63kg: 140 * 0.45 = 63kg
To convert kilograms to pounds:
Multiply the weight in kilograms by 2.2
Example:
83kg to 183lb: 83*2.2=183lbs
To convert feet & inches to inches only:
Multiply the feet times 12 and add the inches
Example: 5ft 6in = 66 in
5*12=60+6=66
To convert inches to centimeters:
Multiply inches by 2.54
Example: 66in * 2.54 = 168 cm
To convert feet and inches to centimeters:
Convert to inches then multiply by 2.54
Example:
5ft * 12 = 60in + 6in = 66in * 2.54 = 167.64 cm
